How did Picasso push the boundaries of modern art?

Objectives:

 

  1. Students will understand the evolution of modern art in the past two centuries.

  2. Students will examine the work of Picasso and its influence towards cubism and minimalism, 

  3. Students will breakdown the elements of cubism and design their own cubism work.

 

Lesson: 

 

  1. Identifying Arts (Hook) - 1 min

    1. Ask students to leave some comments of the cubism they know, their understanding of Pablo Picasso

    2. Show Picasso’s Three Musicians, and discuss it, what’s everyone’s first impression?

 

  1. The evolution of modern art (Introduction); Source:(“Impressionism – The influence of Photography”) -  2 min

    1. Give students a timeline which provides an overview of modern art evolution. (photos). 

    2. Tell the influence of the camera and how it forces impressionism to happen. 

    3. A brief talk about the rise of cubism and the bibliography of Picasso.

    4. Another short introduction about the transition from cubism to minimalism

 

  1. Analyzing Picasso’s Cubism (Lecture); Source: (Fox, Catherine), (“Style Guide: What Is Picasso’s Technique?”) - 4 min

    1. Examin Picasso’s Three Musicians

    2. Share another famous work by Picasso, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and how this painting demonstrates the beginning of Picasso’s art career.

    3. From the painting to the general view of cubism, what makes them so outstanding?

    4. Classify the two branches of cubism: Analytical and Synthetic. (with photos)

    5. Recall what happens in the timeline and emphasize the topic: The influence of cubism in modern art. 

 

  1. Jot down minimalism (Lecture); Source: (“Understanding Stella: The Black Paintings”) - 3 min

    1. Let students watch two paintings done by Frank Stella, The Marriage of Reason and Squalor II and Zambezi.

 

Q: Any thoughts on the paintings?

 

  1. Prove the mst of the students are kinda wrong, the deep meaning of those two paintings

  2. Illustrate the idea of minimalism

  3. Discuss the influence of cubism to minimalism artists. 

  4. Establish a point of view on how minimalism perfectly fits into today’s home decoration and art style. 

 

  1. Create own Cubism work - 4 min

    1. Let students create their own Cubism artwork based on what we analyzed from Pablo Picasso. They will draw with their pencil. 

    2. I will select the best painting they have done and show it to the class. 

 

  1. Epilogue; Source: (“Minimalism”) - 1 min 

    1. Picasso created a new way of thinking about painting for future generations. 

    2. Minimalism plays a huge role in modern art for now. 

    3. The change in human fashion during time.

    4. Cubism’s influence on commercials –  Nude, Green Leaves and Bust sold for $106,482,500.
